Energy saving is an interesting topic for Schools in Hamburg (Germany). The continously increasing prices of energy and the discussion on world wide warming up and CO2-emmisions as well as the project fifty-fifty of the Hamburgian senat were triggers to seriously begin with energy saving.

Some schools in Hamburg took the chance in 2007, to take concrete steps in order to reduce consumption of electricity. The Gymnasium Osterbek, the Kurt-Körber-School and others were the first, realizing this concept of intelligent illumination management in co-operation with Reinbek based Tralec GmbH. Siginficant reductions could be established from the first day.

The realized concepts for energy saving consist of two components:Eco-Maxx LST and EcoMaxx VRU.

EcoMaxx LST is a system for light control. This system is based on a Stored Program Control (SPC) and safeguards, that the light of the school will be turned out systematically, controlled and safe. Under normal conditions the light will be turned of at 05.00 p.m.. The EcoMaxx LST has the option, to turn off the light in defined areas or selected floors of the school at 11.00 p.m. or 01.00 a.m.. In consequence no lights will be on unneccessarily. One EcoMaxx LST has been installed at the Kurt-Körber-Gymnasium in Billstedt.

The active principle of the EcoMaxx VRU is the controlled reduction of the voltage. In case a school is using lamps with inductive ballast, they can decrease energy consumption up to 35% with the actice principle of voltage reducztion. In addition the useful economic life of the illuminants will be extended significantly. This will be another cost reducing effect of EcoMaxx VRU.

In 2007 several schools in Hamburg have installed EcoMaxx successfully and for 2008 more will follow. The want to pick up the chance to do concrete steps to cut energy cost and to reduce CO2-emissions.

Tralec is part of SCHORISCH group. App. 80 employees are working in sales, administartion, product management, developement and production. The company is active in four business units: EcoMaxx, foxfamily - testsystems, electronics and winding amterials.
